Growing Organically

Organic farmers are stewards of the land whose practices promote soil fertility and a healthy farm ecosystem. Fertile Ground fully embraces organic farming practices and is always happy to welcome guests and answer any questions about our farming methods. As of 2015, we are no longer certified organic, as we've found our direct relationship with customers provides accountability for our practices. We are a members of the Ecological Farmers of Ontario and the National Farmers Union.

Organic agriculture is much more than "no-spray." Our practices include:

  • refraining from the use of synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers
  • building & maintaining healthy soils through crop rotations, compost, cover crops, and minimized tillage
  • conserving natural resources by reducing erosion and pollution of air, soil and water
  • using organic seed where possible and avoiding all treated & genetically modified seed
  • reducing food miles by selling produce locally
  • maximizing the nutritional value of food by distributing it quickly & practicing careful post-harvest handling
  • raising our animals on pasture and using only GMO-free feed
  • distributing excess produce to people who need it
  • working in cooperation with other farmers & our community to create a more sustainable way of life
  • sustaining the land in healthy condition for future generations
