Fertile Ground is a locally-embedded, organic vegetable farm operating on a beautiful 100 acre property near Waterloo, ON. Our mixed production includes 10 acres of garden (with 4 in vegetable production annually), pastured laying hens & ducks, 40 acres hay, and honeybees. We partner with a mixed livestock producer who provides pastured meat options to our customers as well. Since building relationships with the people we feed is really important to us, most of our produce is sold through our 250 member CSA, supplemented by some local restaurant & retail sales. We have 2 seedling greenhouses and 1 tomato high tunnel. Although we do a lot of hand work, we have 2 Farmall tractors that we use for primary and in-row cultivation. 2018 projects include experimenting with tillage reduction, further expansion of our cover crop regime, a farmer-led research trial (TBD) and beneficial insect plantings. Our team includes the lead farmer (Angie Koch) and a mixed crew of staff, interns and volunteers. Some live on site, some commute. While the landscape is very rural, we are a mere 10 minute drive from the west edge of the city of Waterloo.
Requirements & Responsibilities
To be considered for our Field Worker position, you should have at least 1 (and preferably more) full season's experience on an ecological vegetable farm, efficient field skills, and the ability to balance working with a crew alongside taking lead responsibility for focus areas. You will work closely with both the head farmer and the Field Manager, offering support to interns and volunteers. Possible areas of lead responsibility include tractor operation, poultry care, equipment maintenance, and irrigation systems. Must have quick hands, positive attitude and ability to see tasks through from start to finish. Tractor experience and skill with tools & equipment are valuable assets. Expect the work to be physically and mentally demanding, with long hours outdoors in all weather.
Responsibilities will include:
- taking part in all aspects of farm work including planting, weeding, pest control, infrastructure management, poultry chores, harvesting, distribution and marketing
- primary responsibility for negotiated focus areas
- supporting management in task prioritization and problem-solving
- helping host at least 1 CSA pick-up weekly June-Oct
Remuneration $2300-$2600/mth. A typical harvest season work week is 45hr Mon-Fri, 6am-4pm with a 1 hr lunch break. Some evening and weekend work is expected on rotation for chores (poultry, greenhouses, irrigation etc). Contract is mid-April to mid-November (7 months – exact dates negotiable) with 1 wk holidays. Lunches included on work days, along with plenty of eggs & vegetables for use in personal cooking. Room may be available for rent in the farmhouse.
