Internship Description
POSITION FILLED FOR 2010
Fertile Ground is a 4 acre vegetable farm located just 15 minutes west of Waterloo. We grow a wide variety of vegetables for our 65 share CSA, the Kitchener Farmers Market, a few local restaurants, and an online buying club. The name Fertile Ground represents not only the soil that feeds the vegetables we grow, but all that feeds our dreams and passions. More than simply feeding people’s bodies with the freshest, highest-quality produce we can grow; we attempt to feed people’s souls by inviting members and customers to become part of the story of the food they eat. We are committed to inspiring people to get excited about their food.
Being located so close to town, we are regularly frequented by volunteers who develop a sense of ownership in the farm. Like us, interns will live in Kitchener-Waterloo and commute the 15km to the country every working day. Shared housing & rides will be provided. (Also accessible by bike.) Interns will be given a bi-weekly stipend to help cover incidental costs. The internship will run from May 1 until the 1st week of November. Because we are scaling our operation to depend on an intern's contribution, we will only consider interns able to commit for the entire season.
Fertile Ground was begun directly out of a CRAFT internship and is now entering its 3rd season of operation. If you’re serious about considering a future in farming and interested in gaining perspective on what it means to begin a small-scale farm operation, we may have a good match. As an intern, you would be involved in learning and taking responsibility for tasks from greenhouse management to field work to CSA and market distribution. We will work together to develop an educational focus and level of responsibility that matches your experience level & interests. Because of our transportation needs, we do require that our intern have a G or G2 license.
Our internship is offered as part of the CRAFT Ontario internship program, so our intern has the opportunity to participate in monthy educational field trips with other interns in South Western Ontario. Please refer to the CRAFT Ontario website for information about the program.
